2017 Schedule

Dick Lehman: May 18th – 20th

Hands-on Workshop – May 18th and 19th – $300 FULL

Demo Day – May 20th – $65 Individual, $45 teacher/student I.D.

Whether new to clay, mid-career, or near the end of the clay trajectory, we can all benefit from some new ideas to layer into what we already know.  Exposure to new techniques seems to energize our own work as we think about incorporating them into our own style.  A day or two spent with a master potter can re-energize our creativity, our passions, our sense of inspiration, and our works.

Dick will be offering a two-day hands-on workshop at Companion Gallery in May, where he will introduce a range of on-wheel-alteration techniques.  Less than 20 new variables can create literally thousands of possible combinations that will soon have you making the lively pots that you’ve dreamed of making.  There will be plenty of time for observing new approaches, time for practice, and a chance for some one-on-one time with Dick for feedback and questions and clarifications.  Dick uses a minimum of specialized tools.  He’’ll bring some extras for you to try out and use….and he will have a batch of new tools that are for sale if you like using them.

A one-day demo-only workshop will follow the hands-on workshop:  Dick will address a range of additional on-wheel alteration techniques, with Dick giving himself some brand new/challenging assignments to solve.  You will be able to watch/applaud/boo/hiss/scorn/praise and chuckle as Dick tries to find his way through some the new design assignments that he poses for himself….observe how he approaches problem solving…and make some notes for how you’d like to work on your own self-imposed assignments after the workshop.

The Layered Surface- Sponsored in part by SPEEDBALL

In this two day workshop, we will focus on developing surface composition by layering underglazes and glazes directly onto leather hard clay. Custom paper and reusable die-cut vinyl stencils will be used to create layered patterns, shapes, and detailed imagery. Students will be able to explore these techniques directly onto their own wheel-thrown or hand-built surfaces. The techniques and materials used during this workshop have the flexibility to be fired to any temperature/atmosphere.
