Ali Schorman

Ali Schorman considers herself an “almost native” Arizonan. She has lived in the Phoenix area since the age of two, apart from time living in Pittsburgh, PA, Long Island, NY and Montpellier, France.

Ali’s first experience with clay was in a ceramics class needed to fulfill a requirement for her BFA (emphasis in Drawing) at Arizona State. She was instantly enamored with the beauty, function and limitless possibilities of the medium. Like most beginners, her initial pots were clunky, so she compensated by carving designs in the clay. She has been carving on pots ever since.

Ali’s decoration is drawn from her fascination with geometry, repetition, and symmetry. Experimenting with the interplay of two-dimensional drawings and the form of three-dimensional vessels provide limitless variation. The designs consist mainly of intersecting circles which are mimicked by dots of slip. The addition and subtraction of clay provide a rich tactile and visual experience for the user.

Presently, Ali is a Ceramic Technician and Arts Educator at the Mesa Arts center. She delights in being part of such a vibrant and generous ceramic community. She lives in Chandler with her husband and two sons, ages 9 and 13.
