Wesley T. Brown

Wesley T. Brown is a ceramic artist who explores struggles and triumphs through cracked surfaces, striking silhouettes, and bold compositions of utilitarian ceramic vessels. Combining smooth wheel-thrown parts with heavily textured slabs Brown creates works that are a meeting place between the familiar and the unknown. The works flow from a life of sober living where every experience leaves an indelible mark. The works with all their joined elements submit themselves to a function showing that despite how scarred one’s past is it can still be used for something useful today.

Brown is a ceramic artist born in California and raised in Dayton, Ohio. Finding his way to clay in high school he continued to Sinclair Community College where he earned his Associate of Art before continuing to a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Bowling Green State University, and a Master of Fine Arts from Indiana University Bloomington. During his schooling, Brown sought out and worked for such potters as Mark Goertzen, Daniel Johnston, and Daniel Evans. Through these working opportunities, he learned how great work comes as an extension of living.

Brown is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Penn State University- University Park. Before his appointment, he taught at East Stroudsburg University, the University of Dayton, and Bard High School Early College Baltimore.
